A78 Fairlie Resurfacing

As part of Transport Scotland’s strategic trunk road management programme, Scotland TranServ will carry out the resurfacing of the A78 through Fairlie as part of a two phased approach.

In order to reduce disruption to the local community, commuters and businesses we will look to deliver this phased approach under a weekend closure and two subsequent overnight closures. Due to the nature of the carriageway in this area, this is a necessary measure to protect the safety of our workers and the travelling public.

The first of these phases will be the resurfacing of approximately 900m of trunk road through the northern half of the village. This will be split into two sections in order to reduce the disruption to local residents and businesses. Works to resurface the southern section of the A78 through Fairlie are being scheduled for Spring 2020.

David Montgomery, Scotland TranServ’s Assistant Roads Design Engineer said:

“We have been working in consultation with the local authority, emergency services and key stakeholders to schedule this phase of work to reduce the disruption to the community. Scotland TranServ has programmed the longer 900m stretch of carriageway at the north of the village to be delivered first. We will come back next year to complete the remainder of resurfacing through Fairlie.

“This initial phase will be delivered in two sections, in order to reduce the impact on residents and businesses within the village. The roads will be resurfaced to the binder level in order to allow vehicle running while the remainder of the project is completed. We would like to take this opportunity to thank local residents and businesses for their patience while this essential programme of work is completed.”

The resurfacing project will be completed under a weekend closure from 8pm on Friday the 18th until 6am on Monday the 21st of October, and subsequent overnight closures on the Monday and Tuesday evenings. This programme is therefore currently schedule as:

  • Overnight Friday 18th – Carriageway removal of first section
  • Daytime Saturday 19th – Resurface section to first layer allowing vehicle running
  • Overnight Saturday 19th - Carriageway removal of second section
  • Daytime Sunday 20th – Resurface second section to first layer for vehicle running
  • Overnight Sunday 20th – Lay first section of top layer
  • Overnight Monday 21st (8pm to 6am) – Lay second section of top layer
  • Overnight Tuesday 22nd (8pm – 6am) – Lining and other marking completion works
