Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland will deliver an eight-week programme of essential barrier replacement works on the M74 between Junctions 8 and 9, from Canderside Toll to Kirkmuirhill.

In association with Transport Scotland, we have identified the project as an essential maintenance scheme, with the barriers reaching the end of their maintainable life; the scheme is vital to maintaining the integrity and safety of the network. Replacement works will follow strict physical distancing protocols in line with the Scottish Government’s COVID-19 guidance.

Laura Gray, Scotland TranServ’s Planned Maintenance Manager said:

“This is an important section of the trunk road network, and as such is used by emergency services, freight, retail and delivery traffic as part of their essential working. It is important that we replace these centre reservation barriers in order to maintain road safety. Traffic volumes currently remain low, in line with government advice, and the programme can therefore be carried out safely and with minimal disruption.

“The health and safety of our workers, our contractors and the travelling public is of paramount importance to Scotland TranServ. Many new working practices have been implemented across our own workforce and those of our contractors and suppliers as we work towards the future delivery of our barrier replacement and other programmes. Thorough risk assessments have been carried out as we take a lead in the delivery of trunk road maintenance.

In order to complete these works as quickly and safely as possible, it will be necessary to implement overnight lane closures on the M74, with running on the northbound hard shoulder and the southbound offside lane closed between Junction 8 and Junction 9. Traffic management will be implemented during the following times:

• 8pm to 6am each night only, from Sunday evening until Thursday morning

The programme will run for eight weeks, beginning on Tuesday the 16th of June. Lane management will only be implemented once traffic volumes are sufficiently low. Motorists can find live trunk road information by visiting trafficscotland.org or by following @trafficscotland on Twitter.
