As part of Transport Scotland’s strategic trunk road management programme, Scotland TranServ is resurfacing 720m of the M8 Westbound at Charing Cross.

In order to complete this £250k programme of works as quickly and safely as possible, we will implement a series of overnight closures of the carriageway between Junction 17 and Junction 19, over the week of Friday 24th May to Saturday 1st of June.

Alan Murray, Scotland TranServ’s Principal Roads Design Engineer said:

“Working in consultation with local authorities, emergency services and key stakeholders we have carefully scheduled these works for a time of low impact. Because the road surface requires a longer period to cool and harden, it is important that we take the additional hours of low traffic during the Bank Holiday weekend to complete these works.

“A similar scheme to resurface a kilometre of the M8 at Anderston Cross was successfully completed during the same timeframe last year. These closures are important to protect the health and safety of our drivers and the travelling public. Additional overnight closures are required during the week in order to install bridge joints and to line the resurfaced carriageway.”

The proposed series of overnight closures would therefore include:

• 8pm Friday 24th to 6am Saturday 25th May
• 8pm Saturday 25th to 8am Sunday 26th May
• 8pm Sunday 26th to 6am Monday 27th May
• 8pm Monday 27th to 6am Tuesday 28th May
• 8pm Tuesday 28th to 6am Wednesday 29th May
• 8pm Wednesday 29th to 6am Thursday 30th May
• 8pm Thursday 30th to 6am Friday 31st May
• 8pm Friday 31st May to 6am Saturday 1st June

The volume of traffic will be monitored, and traffic management only installed once the flow of vehicles is sufficiently low. Special arrangements will be made for emergency service vehicles, however no additional arrangements will made for windfarm traffic, or other wide load vehicles.

The works are being scheduled for a time of low impact, but we would ask drivers using the M8 overnight to plan their journeys with this in mind, and to add some additional journey time.
