M8 Glasgow City Centre Essential Maintenance Programme

As part of Transport Scotland’s strategic trunk road management programme, Scotland TranServ is will combine four projects for the M8 through central Glasgow, under a continuous programme of overnight works between January and March.

In order to reduce disruption to commuters and businesses using the motorway through the city, Scotland TranServ will deliver the resurfacing, bridge joint replacement and concrete testing at the M8 Westbound Woodside Viaduct, alongside the replacement of existing M8 Charing Cross lighting with new LED equivalents.

The first phase of the works will begin in early January with road surface improvements to 1.3km of the Westbound M8 carriageway between Junction 16 and 17.

Lewis Dorans, Scotland TranServ’s project lead on the road resurfacing scheme said:

“Having resurfaced the Eastbound carriageway before Christmas, we will now deliver road surface improvements to the Westbound carriageway. We have been working in consultation with the local authority, emergency services and key stakeholders to programme the works, keeping disruption to a minimum, while ensuring the safety of our workers and the travelling public.”

Works are currently scheduled for 5 overnights from Tuesday 7th until Sunday 12th January, between 10pm and 6am each night, with traffic management only implemented when the vehicle volumes are sufficiently low.

Following on from the M8 Eastbound bridge joint replacement programme at Woodside Viaduct, works are now intended to switch to the M8 Westbound carriageway.

Moira Johnstone, Scotland TranServ’s Structures Delivery Manager added:

“Works to remove and replace 24 joints on the Eastbound carriageway prior to Christmas ran smoothly. Weather permitting, we will run a similar scheme on the Westbound M8 to replace the remaining 29 bridge joints in our programme. We have been working alongside our colleagues to carefully plan these works for minimal impact on commuters and businesses.”

The bridge joint replacement works will begin on completion of the resurfacing scheme, with a total of 29 existing joints removed and replaced with modern equivalents. Works are currently programmed to begin overnight only, working every night, from Monday the 13th of January for 15 nights.

Alongside these projects, Scotland TranServ is also proposing the replacement of existing lighting in the M8 Charing Cross tunnel with modern, energy efficient LED lighting, in line with the rest of the M8 corridor, where approximately 2000 lanterns have been replaced in the last two years, delivering a 60% energy saving.

Scotland TranServ’s Principal Lighting Engineer Aled Davies said:

“Scotland TranServ, working on behalf of Transport Scotland, has already replaced around 2000 of the outdated orange high pressure sodium lanterns along the M8 corridor, delivering energy savings equivalent to powering 600 homes annually. Innovatively, lighting levels will also adjust dependent on the brightness of the day.”

Works are programmed to be carried out overnights only, with lighting in the Westbound side of the tunnel replaced between the 13th of January and the 10th of February, before switching Eastbound from the 10th of February until the 11th of March.

To complete the works as quickly and safely as possible, it will be necessary to implement overnight closures of the M8 in this area, switching from Westbound to Eastbound in line with the works programme. Short overnight diversions will be in place throughout the duration of this combined scheme. Special access arrangements are being made for emergency service vehicles. No additional requirements will be made for windfarm traffic or wide loads.

While these closures are in place, Scotland TranServ will also carry out cyclic maintenance works to help reduce the longer-term impact on commuters and businesses.
