New energy efficient gantries for M8

GANTRY

Scotland TranServ will this weekend (24th &25th November) reinstate the first of five fully refurbished and modernised motorway gantry structures on the M8.

As part of Transport Scotland’s strategic trunk road maintenance programme, the structures had earlier been removed, stripped down, repaired and repainted, before new energy efficient LED lighting was installed.

Gordon Gibney, Scotland TranServ’s Operations Delivery Manager said:

“The programme involves the movement of very large plant and the lifting of heavy structures on Scotland’s busiest motorway. Working at nights over a number of weekends, we have removed these 20-tonne structures, carefully transporting them to our fabrication contractor in Renfrew.

“The gantry structures are being stripped back, restored and repainted, with modern back lighting installed and over the next few months we will begin to re-erect these structures, lowering them back into place.”

Re-erection of the gantries will take place late Friday evening to early Saturday morning on the following dates:

  • 24th and 25th November - Junction 11 (Glasgow Fort) Westbound on M8 - Gantry 04-900
  • 8th and 9th December - Junction 18 (Charing Cross) Westbound on M8 - Gantry 02-950
  • 12th and 13th January 2018 - Junction 18 (Charing Cross) Eastbound on M8 - Gantry 02-040
  • 19th & 20th January 2018 - Junction 11 (Glasgow Fort) Eastbound on M8 - Gantry 04-130
  • 9th & 10th February 2018 - Junction 11 (Glasgow Fort) Westbound on M8 - Gantry 04-890

The motorway will be closed from 10pm on the Friday night till 6am on the Saturday morning on these dates to allow works to be carried out safely. Local diversions will be in place during these times.

Alaister Walker, Scotland TranServ’s Senior Structures Technician added:

“We’ve worked with Police Scotland, local authorities and key stakeholders to schedule this project for the period of lowest traffic impact. As well as reducing steel waste by refurbishing these gantry structures, we have also installed new energy efficient LED lighting, saving up to 60% on previous power use. The new structures require less maintenance and therefore that’s also better for the health and safety of our workers.”
