Local residents and businesses are set to benefit from the addition of a brand new, £2.5 million footbridge on the M8 near Hillington.
Scotland TranServ is currently overseeing the works which are currently being carried out by contractor Graham Construction. The project is expected to last approximately 16 weeks.
To ensure the safety of motorists and pedestrians alike the new bridge, which will be constructed off site, must be installed under a series of total closures which will take place over three Saturday evenings. The planned closures will take place on:
Gordon Wilson, contract director for Scotland TranServ commented:
“This significant project will see the old bridge, which has come to the end of its operational lifespan, being replaced by a brand new structure which is in keeping with modern day standards and will benefit Glasgow for years to come.
“To ensure the safety of motorists and local residents the installation of the new bridge will be carried out overnight when traffic flows are lighter; ensuring that delays are minimal.”
Scotland TranServ currently manages and maintains over 1800 structures across south west Scotland. The current bridge no longer conforms to modern day standards and will be replaced by a sustainable, new structure which is partly made of recycled materials and features easy access for cyclists and less-abled pedestrians.
A local diversion will be in place with motorists being directed westbound through Hillington and Paisley and rejoining the M8 at Arkleston. Motorists traveling eastbound will exit at Arkleston before rejoining the M8 again at Hillington.

Largs’ seafront is set to become a shining example across south west Scotland when almost 40 streetlights are replaced with brand new LED lights.
Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland will begin the programme of work on 16 February 2015 to replace the dated lighting on Largs Seafront. It is expected that the work will last for up to five weeks.
The existingorange-glow lamps will be replaced by new bright white LED lights, providing better perception of light in this picturesque part of the Ayrshire town whilst reducing energy usage by up to 60%.
Gordon Wilson, contract director for Scotland TranServ said:
“We are delighted to roll out this installation programme of LED lighting across South West Scotland, with Largs being one of the first stops on the project. Replacing the ageing orange-glow streetlights with the new energy and cost efficient LED equivalent will not only improve the town’s appearance and showcase its stunning attractions but is also kinder to the environment.”
“Scotland TranServ is committed to supporting the economic growth and development of local communities and we are pleased to play an important part in creating a valuable first impression for visitors to Largs for decades to come.”
The project will concentrate around the ferry terminal and seafront area, providing improved light for visitors and locals alike. It is expected the work will be completed ahead of the busy tourist season and that disruption will be minimal.
The lighting columns are eight metres high with a black coating protecting them from the rust which affected their predecessors. The LED lights are also expected to last for up to 20 years so there will be less maintenance required over the long term.
