A78 resurfacing works

A £120k programme of essential maintenance works is set to commence on the A78 in Greenock between Flatterton Road and Spango Valley on Monday 27 June 2016.

Recent inspections have shown that the road surface is in need of repair therefore Scotland TranServ, operating on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out the work to resurface 1,200m of road.

Over 15,000 motorists use the A78 each day which connects Greenock to the Ayrshire coast each day therefore works will be carried out overnight when traffic flows are lighter. A total closure will be in place from 8.00pm on Monday 27 June until 6.00am on Wednesday 29 June to ensure the safety of operatives and road users alike. A local diversion will also be in operation.

Scotland TranServ’s operating company representative, Andy Fraser said:

Further works on A898 Erskine Bridge

Teams will be working at heights of 40 meters to carry out surveys on the two towers of the Erskine Bridge on Saturday 2 July 2016 as preparations continue for the installation of a £3.25m lighting scheme.

The 20 week programme, which is being overseen by Scotland TranServ on behalf of Transport Scotland, is expected to deliver 70% in energy savings when it is completed.

Everything possible is being done to minimise disruption across the scheme and the majority of the work is being carried out overnight. However, one lane will be closed in each direction on the bridge from 6.00am until 6.00pm on Saturday 2 July to allow the principal contractor Lightways to work at the required height safely and during daylight hours.

It is likely that journey times will increase by approximately 30 minutes as a result and road users are encouraged to plan ahead using Traffic Scotland’s website and Twitter feeds for live, traffic information.

Scotland TranServ’s operating company representative, Andy Fraser said:

“Our contractor must gain access to the tower tops to carry out essential preparatory surveys in advance of the installation of new LED lighting.

“Safety is of the utmost priority therefore traffic management will be in place to protect the workforce and road users alike.

“We have programmed the works over the shortest time possible to minimise disruption, with the tower top works taking place at the weekend to avoid peak time congestion, however road users should expect some delays.”

The cycle and pedestrian lanes will remain unaffected with north and southbound lanes open throughout the works.

£1.6m M8 barrier upgrade

Following on from the successful completion of M8 barrier replacement works last year, between Junctions 12 and 15, Scotland TranServ is about to begin the second phase of improvements.

A further £1.6m investment from Transport Scotland will see the upgrade and replacement of the existing central reserve safety barrier across three locations on the M8 and the M77 at the offslip to Nithsdale overbridge throughout this financial year.

The first in the series of works will take place on the M8 between Junctions 10 and 12, from Sunday 19 June 2016.

Scotland TranServ, which manages and maintains south west Scotland’s roads will carry out the works, which are expected to last for almost 10 weeks. A reduced speed limit of 50mph will be enforced throughout the duration of the works to ensure the safety of operatives and road users alike and road users are being urged to slow down

The works will be carried out under a series of lane closures between 8.00pm and 6.00am each night.

Andy Fraser, operating company representative for Scotland TranServ said:

“The safety of our operatives and road users is of the utmost priority therefore it is vital that we enforce a reduced speed limit of 50mph. Carrying out the repairs overnight will also ensure that traffic flows are at their lightest; ensuring minimum delays.”

Temporary signs will be in place on the approach to the works to inform road users of the new speed limit. Real time traffic information can be found at www.trafficscotland.org or by following @Traffic Scotland on Twitter.

A8 works at Woodhall Roundabout

Scotland TranServ will today (14 June) return to the A8 at Woodhall Roundabout to complete works which were extended due to additional deterioration of the carriageway, which was identified during the weekend resurfacing works. These additional works were partially completed over the weekend, however the final elements of resurfacing and line marking works are required to be completed during the current closure.

The A8 westbound will be closed from 9.30am on 14 June until 6.00am on 15 June. A local diversion will be in place throughout the works. Additional resources will be deployed to assist in minimising disruption to road users however delays during peak times should be expected and we would urge road users to plan their journeys accordingly.

We would like to thank the local community and road users for their patience whilst these essential maintenance works are carried out.

As we move into year four of the contract, we celebrate passing the halfway mark for the initial Contract which will span five years. There is also potential to extend for a further five years beyond this.

Our employees are now fully integrated into our business, bringing years of skills, knowledge and talent necessary to run a successful, innovative trunk road maintenance and management company. Through the support of our parent organisations Balfour Beatty and Mouchel and that of our client Transport Scotland, we have made significant progress in managing and improving more than 630km of trunk roads network across South West Scotland.

The highlights of 2015/16, as detailed in this years’ Report include the following:

  • Investing approximately £37m on behalf of Transport Scotland to improve the quality of south west Scotland’s trunk roads network, delivering tangible benefits to road users.
  • Our Trunk Road Incident Support Service (TRISS) teams attended more than 7,000 incidents in the last year alone, supporting Police Scotland and enabling officers to return to their core duties.
  • We remained committed to corporate sustainability and in 2015/16, 6% of waste from our construction activities was diverted from landfill.
  • By commencing a programme of the installation of sustainable LED lighting and replacing 24 high masts across the M8, A75 and A737 we achieved over 60% in overall energy savings for our client.
  • We launched a campaign across south west Scotland to ask road users to ‘Drive your litter home’ resulting in a 24% reduction in the amount of litter collected in 2015/16.

Our business operates on a 24/7 basis, supporting the public through our TRISS and Incident Response teams. We provide the reassurance to the public that the trunk roads remain snow and ice free over the winter period, through our Winter Service teams.
