£650k investment in improving Ayrshire’s trunk roads A77 schemes set to get underway

Over half a million pounds of investment from Transport Scotland will be spent on improving the A77 at three locations, with the works being carried out over three weekends beginning on Friday, 21 October 2016.

Scotland TranServ, which manages and maintains south west Scotland’s motorways and trunk roads on behalf of Transport Scotland, including the A77, will carry out the major schemes in just 21 days to resurface approximately two miles of the route.

To protect the safety of motorists and road users alike, a full closure is required to be in place with a signed local diversions in operation throughout the works. The works will be carried out at the following locations:

  • A77 Bridgemill to Girvan Mains – 24 hour working from 8.00pm on Friday 21 October until 6.00am on Monday 24 October.
  • A77 Minnybae – 24 hour working from 8.00pm on Friday 28 October until 6.00am on Monday 31 October.
  • A77 Ardwell - further information will be provided closer to the works.

Scotland TranServ’s operating company representative, Andy Fraser said:

“This significant investment will ensure that the A77 is maintained to a good standard and can withstand the impact of the 4,000 vehicles which travel on this route each day.

“We have made every effort to programme these works over the shortest period of time, therefore reducing disruption to road users; however motorists particularly those use the ferry ports should plan their journeys accordingly.”

M74 JUNCTION 9 OFF SLIP RESURFACING WORKS

Road users are set to benefit from £150k of resurfacing and barrier work on the M74 southbound beginning on Wednesday 26 October 2016.

Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland, will carry out the improvements to the off slip at Junction 9, Kirkmuirhill.

The work will be undertaken in two stages and closures of the off-slip will be required as below.

Wednesday 26, Thursday 27 and Friday 28 October - Each night from 8.00 pm to 6.00 am then again on Monday 31 October and Tuesday 1 November overnight from 8.00pm to 6am.

In addition, some daytime lane closures will also be required on the slip road and hard shoulder of the southbound carriageway. These will be in place from Thursday 27 to Friday 28 October 2016 from 6.00am to 8.00pm each day.

“We have considered all the available alternative methods to carry out these works as safely and as quickly as possible, and overnight closures present the safest option, whilst helping to minimise disruption to road users.

“More than 15,000 vehicles use the M74 each day and it is essential that we carry out these resurfacing works to ensure the integrity of the off slip for the travelling public for years to come.”

M8 gantry improvements

The third phase of a £6m rolling programme to refurbish the overhead gantries on the M8 motorway will commence on Monday, 24 October 2016.

The investment from Transport Scotland will see four gantries on the M8, between Junctions 10 and 11 (westbound), 11 and 12 (westbound), 14 and 15 (eastbound) and 24 and 25 (westbound) being refurbished. The refurbishments will involve maintenance works to the structural steelwork and the upgrading of the lighting technology within the gantries.

Due to the nature of the works and to protect the health and safety of motorists and road workers alike a series of traffic management measures will be in place overnight, between the hours of 8.00pm and 6.00am, from Monday 24 until Monday 31 October. Further details are noted below.

Scotland TranServ, which maintains almost 200 sign gantries on south west Scotland’s motorways and trunk roads will carry out the work to the structures, which provide a lane management facility and keep motorists up to date with real time traffic information.

The refurbished structures will provide a number of long term benefits including energy savings and helping to reduce the increasing demands of routine maintenance.

“We have successfully completed the first two phases of this programme and we hope to emulate this during the third round of refurbishments.

“Some of the existing gantries have been in place for over 30 years and this programme will result in significant long term benefits to thousands of motorists using the M8 each day.

“Not only has the signage been improved but also the innovative use of LED lighting will achieve 70% in energy savings per gantry each year ensuring we play a pivotal role in helping Transport Scotland meet its carbon reduction targets for 2020.”

A738 Dalry Road to McLuckie Drive, Kilwinning works postponed

Unfortunately due to the weather forecast of prolonged heavy rain for Saturday and Sunday the works scheduled to take place on the A738 Dalry Road to McLuckie Drive this weekend have been postponed until further notice.

Advanced notification and a revised construction date will be issued in due course when works are due to be rescheduled.

A76 Sanquhar Tollbooth resurfacing

Resurfacing and patching works will take place on the A76 in Sanquhar on Sunday 23 October 2016.

Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland will carry out the resurfacing and patching works on the A76 at Sanquhar Tollbooth on Sunday 23 October 2016.

Due to the location of the works and to protect the health and safety of our workforce and road users a total closure will be in place from Carronbridge to Cumnock bypass from 7.00am to 7.00pm. A diversion will be in place.

£740K improvement project: A75 Glenterry to Barharrow

A four week programme to improve the road surface of the A75, from Glenterry to Barharrow will commence on Friday 14 October 2016.

Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland will carry out the works, which will involve resurfacing over 1km of the route. Safety barriers, roadside drainage and signage will also be renewed as part of the project.

In order to carry out the works safely a full closure will be in place from 7.00pm on Friday 14 October until 6.00am on Monday 17 October and motorists should follow the signed diversion route. A convoy system will then be in operation 24 hours a day for the remainder of the works.

During the scheme preparation, extensive consultation was carried out with the local authority, community council and the emergency services.

LOCAL ROAD USERS TO BENEFIT FROM A75 RESURFACING WORKS

Road users are set to benefit from over £75k of resurfacing works on the A75 at The Glen which is located west of Dumfries.

Scotland TranServ, on behalf of Transport Scotland will carry out the resurfacing works from Friday 7 until Monday 10 October 2016.

Works will be carried out in both directions therefore a total closure will be in place from Garroch Roundabout to west of Springholm from 5.00pm on Friday evening until 06.00am on Monday morning.

“This essential maintenance scheme is vital to ensuring we prolong the lifespan of the road surface benefiting almost 5,000 road users using the A75 each day.
